YIVO Presents: A Special Evening

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the
Uriel Weinreich Summer Program
& Honoring Chava Lapin

New York, NY – The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a special evening celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Uriel Weinreich Summer Program and honoring Chava Lapin for her lifetime commitment to Yiddish language and teaching. The evening will take place on July 11th, 2018 at 7:00pm at YIVO, located in the Center for Jewish History at 15 West 16th Street and will begin with a buffet dinner, followed by the program.

The evening's program will feature music and dramatic performances by Shane Baker, Eléonore Biezunski, Lauren Brody, Daniel Kahn, Zalmen Mlotek, Miryem-Khaye Seigel, and Yelena Shmulenson, as well as guest speeches by leading scholars and distinguished alumni of the summer program. A new exhibit, highlighting the summer program through the years will also be unveiled at the celebration.

The celebration will also honor Chava Lapin, distinguished teacher, scholar, and YIVO board member for over four decades, for her inspiring commitment to the perpetuation of the Yiddish language, as a teacher, scholar, and YIVO board member for over four decades.

About the Uriel Weinreich Summer Program

The Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature, and Culture, established in 1968, is the longest-running Yiddish summer program in the world. In partnership with Bard College since 2012, the program offers peerless instruction in the Yiddish language and an in-depth exploration of the literature and culture of East European Jewry and its diaspora communities. Participants attend from Brazil, Japan, South Africa, and across Eastern Europe and the United States. The Weinreich Program treats Yiddish as a living language and emphasizes spoken Yiddish.
