A Celebration of the Life and Works of Bronx Native Author, Chaim Grade

Apr 9, 2013

(NEW YORK, April 9, 2013) – The YIVO Jewish Culture Series, a partnership with the YIVO Institute of Jewish Research and Riverdale Temple, will feature a special program on Sunday, April 14 at 2pm at the Riverdale Temple located at 4545 Independence Ave. (at 246th Street). This event will celebrate the awarding of the personal papers and library of the esteemed Yiddish author Chaim Grade to the YIVO and the National Library of Israel.

In accordance with the terms of the successor agreement, the assets of the estate will be permanently housed at YIVO at their world headquarters in New York City and shared with the National Library of Israel. YIVO and the National Library of Israel have agreed to work together to digitize the entire archive and make it accessible for scholars globally in recognition of Grade’s rich legacy.

The program at the Riverdale Temple on the afternoon of April 14th includes remarks by Jonathan Brent, YIVO executive director, a lecture by Professor Curt Leviant, a personal friend of Chaim Grade and a translator of his works, and speeches by public officials in recognition of the fact that this Bronx based author’s works will remain in New York City. Jonathan Brent, YIVO’s executive director commenting about Chaim Grade, notes "that his works are Faulknerian in power in their depiction of place and the psychological and moral depths of his characters."

A reception follows the formal program and is open to all attendees. There is a $5.00 suggested contribution at the door.
