This is a live, online course held twice weekly on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted mostly in Yiddish, with some English used when necessary.

Who should take this course?
This course is appropriate for those enrolled in level Beys in the 2021 Summer Program. It is also appropriate for those who completed Beginner IV Yiddish spring 2021.

What topics will this class cover?
This course will expand on listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills while integrating cultural content and grammar. Topics covered will include a review of past tense, all 3 cases, and pronouns. New grammatical structures will include comparative and superlative adjectives, passive voice, conditional and verbs with adverbial complements and with the pronoun Zikh. All grammar will be taught in context.

Course Materials:
This course will use Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Volume II by Sheva Zucker (Purchase). Audio materials (Purchase) and the answer key to exercises in the book (Purchase) are highly recommended. In addition, supplementary stories and songs will be used and made available to students digitally throughout the class.

Perl (Paula) Teitelbaum was born and raised in a Yiddish-speaking home in post-war Wroclaw. After immigrating to the United States in 1967, Paula became actively involved in New York City’s Yiddish-speaking circles. During her professional career Paula has taught Yiddish as well as Spanish and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) in a variety of settings, including college, and pre-K through high school and adult education classes. Using her TESOL background Paula has applied some of the most successful teaching methods into her Yiddish classes.
