Project Goals

• 650+ Archival Linear Feet in New York  (est. 1.2 million pages)
• 275+ Archival Linear Feet in Vilnius (est. 230,000 pages)
• ~8,000 Hebrew and Yiddish volumes in New York
• 4,488 Hebrew and Yiddish volumes in Vilnius

The project scope has expanded greatly since its inception and launch in 2014. As the project was discussed and advertised around Lithuania, new repositories were revealed to have materials from YIVO’s original collections before World War II. As careful processing commenced in New York and Lithuania, additional unexpected items were unearthed. A reassessment of the project in 2018 revealed that the collection is now almost twice the size of what was originally planned. The new assessment revealed that there may be as many as 12,500 library volumes and up to 2 million archival documents.
