The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research has completed the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Online Collections Project (EBYVOC), a historic 7-year, $7 million initiative to process, conserve and digitize YIVO’s divided prewar library and archival collections. Through the Project, these materials have been digitally reunited through a dedicated web portal, making them accessible to a worldwide audience for the first time.

The Yiddish actor and director Zygmunt Turkow was born and raised in Warsaw, where he got his start on the stage and went on to co-found—in partnership with his wife at the time, actress Ida Kaminska—the influential dramatic troupe “Varshever Yidisher Kunst-Theater” (Warsaw Yiddish Art Theater; circa 1924-1928).

Elias Tcherikower was a founding member of YIVO in Vilna, a member of its Executive Committee, and Chairman of YIVO’s Historical Section from 1925-1940 as well as a historian and political activist.

A list of the 51 collections from the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Online Collections project available to view online, containing prewar YIVO administrative records, Yiddish theater and literature, Jewish community council records, and the personal papers of historical figures like Simon Dubnow and Shalom Schwarzbard. 

Archivists & Digital Experts Strive to Preserve a Precious Heritage

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $119,433 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) through Save America’s Treasures Grant.

On September 19, 2019, YIVO Executive Director and CEO Jonathan Brent spoke at the exhibition opening of the The Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences’ newest exhibit, Documents of the YIVO Archive in The Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

The recently appointed President of the Republic of Lithuania H.E. Gitanas Nausėda and First Lady Diana Nausėdienė visited the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York.
