This class meets weekly in person at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website.

Who should take this course?
This course is for those who have taken one semester of Yiddish. It is appropriate for those who took Beginner I Yiddish in Spring 2023.

What topics will this class cover?
The goals of the course are to practice conversation in Yiddish and continue to make progress in grammar, particularly past tense. Each class will consist of a group conversation, a reading from a real Yiddish text, and a grammar lesson. The culminating project of the course will be a short family history or autobiography written in Yiddish. This course will cover roughly Lessons 8-18 from Uriel Weinreich’s College Yiddish.

Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Andryusha Kuznetsov is a teacher, translator, and artist living in Brooklyn, New York. He received his BA in Russian, Yiddish, and French literatures from UC Berkeley and has previously taught Yiddish in the San Francisco Bay Area. He is a member of GLYK, a New York-based queer Yiddish theater collective.
