Instructor: Josh Price

This course will offer an introduction to the life and work of Chaim Grade (1910, Vilna — 1982, New York). Across four sessions, we will consider Grade's underappreciated poetry as well as his canonical prose in short story and novel form, culminating in the recently-published Sons and Daughters (2025). We will explore Grade's place in Yiddish literary history and his postwar project of remembrance, impossible and necessary in equal measure. Discussion and readings in English; Yiddish originals provided upon request.

Yiddish Level:
Students of all Yiddish levels and students without any Yiddish language background are welcome to register for this course.

Course Materials:
The instructor will provide all required course materials digitally throughout the class on Canvas.
